Rectangular in shape, with a slight projection, characteristic of the Transition style, this chest of drawers rests on four curved legs, whose delicate curvature gives a visual lightness and grace typical of the Louis XV aesthetic, while announcing the emerging sobriety of the Louis XVI style. These finely sculpted legs end in gilt bronze sabots known as "snails", adding a touch of brilliance and robustness.
The finely chiseled gilt bronze ornamentation testifies to the attention paid to detail. The bronzes, of great finesse, include elegant corner drops, ribbon knot keyholes, and lozenge pull handles, typical of the period, which combine functionality and aesthetics. These gilt bronze elements contrast harmoniously with the satin veneer, creating a balance between decorative richness and classical restraint.
The front of the chest of drawers, equipped with two drawers without crosspieces (a characteristic creation of the Transition period during which the removal of visible crosspieces allowed for flat fronts, aligned with the canons of nascent neoclassicism), offer an elegant symmetry. The drawers are adorned with satin veneer whose grain is arranged horizontally both on the front and on the sides, highlighting the technical mastery of the cabinetmaker.
The top, in red Aleppo breccia marble, draws a slightly scalloped shape following the lines of the chest of drawers, adding a touch of softness to the silhouette.
This chest of drawers perfectly reflects the spirit of the Transition period, marked by a shift in tastes towards greater simplicity and geometric rigor, while retaining the elegance and fluidity inherited from the Louis XV style. The stamp of Louis Péridiez, known for his high-quality furniture, guarantees the authenticity, the provenance of this piece, and its balance between opulence and sobriety.
