The work, of fine workmanship, represents a middle-aged man, sporting long, powdered hair, in keeping with the fashion of the late 17th century. He is wearing a breastplate and a lace cravat, a sign of his military and social rank. The direct and assured gaze, as well as the dark background nuanced by a stormy sky, give the painting an imposing presence.
