Touching representation of the crucified Christ, in the Baroque style, carved in wood and retaining its original polychromy, partially chipped.
Description
Christ, with his head bowed and eyes closed, expresses great gentleness mixed with suffering. His wavy hair is carefully treated, and the perizonium tied on the hip, painted in light blue, has deep stylized folds typical of the 17th-18th century.
The body is very expressive, marked with stigmata and red blood drips still visible, with numerous wood-boring holes attesting to the age of the piece.
The arms are missing, which is not uncommon for sculptures from this period that have been removed from their original cross. The quality of the modeling, the crossed position of the legs and the anatomical realism indicate a popular but careful workshop work, probably from Spain or southern Italy.
