Devotional crucifix from the Holy Land, dated to the late 18th – early 19th century, typical of the work of Christian artisans from Bethlehem or Jerusalem. This remarkable piece combines a blackened wood structure with delicate mother-of-pearl inlays and sculptures, finely engraved by hand.
Description
Christ on the cross is depicted in mother-of-pearl, surrounded by finely detailed biblical scenes, probably the Evangelists, as well as classical symbols of the Passion (the skull of Golgotha, the INRI inscription). The elegantly decorated tripod base features a central mother-of-pearl medallion depicting, among other things, Saint Paul (identifiable by the sword and the book), surrounded by a radiant halo of inlaid diamonds and stars. Oriental work intended for the European pilgrim market, this Crucifix testifies to the excellence of the Christian workshops of Palestine, renowned for their mastery of mother-of-pearl since the 17th century.
