TALASHKINO SCHOOL (c. 1900)
Mary of Egypt.
Tempera on wooden panel.
H_26 cm W_17 cm (the icon)
H_51 cm W_32 cm (overall)
Good condition.
Provenance: Private collection.
The Talashkino Art Centre, founded by Princess Maria Tenisheva at the turn of the 20th century, was a major centre for the revival of the Russian applied arts. Blending traditional folk art with the Art Nouveau, the Talashkino workshops (notably under the direction of Sergei Malyutin) produced remarkable objects and pieces of carved wooden furniture, characterised by medieval-inspired motifs, substantial forms and great graphic expressiveness.
Our piece will fit perfectly into the current trend of rediscovering early 20th-century Russian decorative art, which is particularly sought after for the quality of craftsmanship in its symbolist-style carved frames and the historical significance of Princess Tenisheva’s workshops.
