It shows Mary tenderly embracing her son, cheek to cheek. This iconographic representation is of the "eleousa" type, meaning compassion in Greek. It symbolizes infinite love. The expressions of Mary and Jesus, of great gentleness, invite contemplation.
It dates from the second half of the 18th century -- around 1780 -- and comes from the Volga region in Russia.
It is finely painted on gold leaf with tempera in a soft and warm chromatic range. Christ's clothes are also richly enhanced with gold using the chrysography technique.
In the left border, Saint Pelagia of Antioch is represented.
Good general state of conservation consistent with the age of the work. Superb patina. Wear of time, cracks and small losses to the pictorial layer.
