Object description :

"Icon Prince Theodore And His Sons Constantine And David, Russia Circa 1700, Fiodor Feodor"
Rare Russian icon depicting Saint Theodore, Prince of Smolensk and Yaroslavl (center), accompanied by his two sons Princes Constantine (right) and David (left).

This exquisite icon comes from the "Golden Ring" in the Moscow region and dates from the first half of the18th century, circa 1700/1740.
It is made in tempera (paint based on natural pigments and egg yolk). The chromatic range is rich and warm in ochre tones.

Born around 1240 and died in 1299, Prince Theodore (also spelled Fyodor or Feodor) is known for his contribution to the evangelization of part of the territories then controlled by the Golden Horde. He became a monk at the end of his life and is depicted here wearing the skhima—a type of robe worn by monks. He was canonized in 1467. His sons, saints Constantine and David, are wearing their princely clothes.

Very good general condition. The wooden panel is structurally sound and has retained its two reinforcements on the back. Wear, cracks, losses and small restorations to the pictorial layer which are consistent with the age of the work.
Old and faded (hardly legible) workshop or collection stamp on the back of the icon (see photos).

This icon is sold with its certificate of authenticity and a complete description of the work.
