Saru, is one of the indigenous names for monkey in Japanese. On the archipelago, there is only one species of monkey, the Japanese macaque. The Buddhist Jizō, was a bodhisattva of souls in hell and guardian of children.” (see example at the end of the slideshow).
Supernatural beings associated with the monkey; including jizō  are all assigned the role of healing. Many parts of the monkey's body were used as medicine, dating back to the 6th century.
