Large Round Decorative Dish In Gien Earthenware – Circa 1945.
Artist: Gien
Imposing glazed earthenware wall dish, produced by the Gien factory between 1941 and 1950, as evidenced by the three-towered "GIEN FRANCE" stamp on the reverse. The hand-painted letters G and S are most likely the initials of the decorative painter, as each piece was entirely hand-decorated. The spectacular decoration draws its inspiration from the Italian Renaissance: against a deep blue background, a profusion of winged putti, chimeras, scrolls, grotesques, and stylized foliage unfold, executed in a vivid polychrome of great refinement. The border, enlivened by a chained motif, perfectly frames this central composition. A fine example of Gien's artistic expertise in the first half of the 20th century, combining classical heritage and decorative virtuosity.
