Gabriel DELUC (Saint-Jean-de-Luz 1883 - Souain-Perthes-lès-Hurlus 1916) “The port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz” (1904) Oil on canvas signed and dated lower right H: 45.5 cm W: 55 cm Biography of Gabriel DELUC: Gabriel DELUC, born in 1883 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, was a student of Bonnat whose career began spectacularly between 1906 and 1914. But, engaged in the First World War, he disappeared in the trenches in September 1916. Admired by his peers, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français, the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, in Biarritz, Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, but also in Russia and the United States. He is considered the youngest member of the Bayonne School. Deeply attached to his native country, he is one of the creators of 20th-century "Basque painting." Some of Gabriel Deluc's works are currently unobtainable, but several postcards of the paintings exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français exist. The last exhibition of his work took place in 2016 at the Guéthary Museum. It revealed a highly gifted artist, fascinated by color and form, between modernity and tradition, who left behind portraits, impressionist landscapes, and evocations of the Basque Country (a model for the next generation). Influenced by Symbolism, he was inspired by Ravel's theme of Daphnis and Chloe. The composer dedicated the Forlane from Le Tombeau de Couperin to him.
