Romantic Dagger - Hybrid Figure Of Satyr And Devil - Gilt Bronze - XIXᵉ Century

Very beautiful and unusual Romantic dagger in gilt bronze late 19th century.
The pommel and hilt are combined into a single subject: a fascinating hybrid figure, both satyr and devil, topped with goat horns ending in drooping braids and dressed in an antique-style tunic, a subtle play of symbols between wild animality and human sophistication.
The hilt is adorned with two intertwined snakes and open gules, recalling the myths of temptation, occult wisdom and the protective power of snakes.
The finely-worked scabbard is decorated in the center with a snake entangling the scabbard, and at the tip with 2 intertwined snakes.
Because of the repetitive presence of the snakes, the satanic subject takes precedence over the other supposition.
This dagger, characteristic of the fantastic taste of the late XIXᵉ century, blends antique, Gothic and symbolist influences.

Condition: very good overall condition for the bronze, despite a patina bearing traces of use normal for an antique object.
The blade shows old pitting and a few traces of stabilized rust, without fragility.
