One of the best regional cabinetmakers of his time and the best known of a line of Montbéliard craftsmen. He produced numerous pieces of furniture, chests of drawers, secretaries, ... well-proportioned and very well executed. Abraham-Nicolas Couleru, born in Bart in 1716, he settled in Montbéliard in 1720 with his father. He first trained as a spinning wheel turner then began training in Paris in 1739 where he learned marquetry work and decided to adopt the profession of cabinetmaker. Upon his return in 1746, he opened a cabinetmaking workshop, married Catherine Megnin in 1750 and was admitted to the mastery of carpenters of Montbéliard. His business, sponsored by Duke Charles-Eugene of Württemberg, sovereign of the country, soon flourished. The civil registry records indicate that "on August 30, 1812 at 11 o'clock in the morning, Abraham Nicolas Couleru died, aged 95 years, 11 months and 13 days, residing in Montbéliard. Declaration made by Georges Louis Couleru, his son, a watchmaker, aged 50, and by Frédéric Belfils, shoemaker, close neighbor of the deceased." Until the beginning of the reign of Louis XVI, Couleru produced a quantity of carefully crafted and tastefully decorated chests of drawers, desks, secretaries, etc. However, it seems that he made a specialty of sloping desks, which represent almost half of the furniture signed by his hand that we know today.
