Object description :

"Very Rare Pewter Dish - Vannes, Circa 1700"

EXCEPTIONAL very large ROUND DISH in partially hammered pewter with a molded edge called "venison".
City control mark: crowned C / VANNES / 1691.
Unidentified maker's mark: V / IQ / 1693 / ermine.
Diameter: 47.3 cm.
VANNES, Late 17th or early 18th century

Very good condition, a small radiating crack on the edge is however noted.
Exceptional, this is the only piece to have appeared on the market for more than 40 years; to my knowledge no book or specialized sales catalog cites an object of this provenance.
These large dishes made it possible to present game and poultry "au naturel" at the table of guests. The dish then returned to the office to be prepared for consumption.
Discussion:
A Jean QUOQUIN pewter potter who died in 1688 is mentioned in VANNES. It is highly likely that the hallmark described above is that of a relative, the small V placed above the I and the Q could be either the initial of the middle name of this master to distinguish it from that of his parent or grandfather, or the initial of Vannes.
