Louis of Bavaria (1282-1347) was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in Rome in 1328. After being elected King of Germany in 1314, he came into conflict with Pope John XXII, who refused to recognize his reign. In 1328, Louis went to Rome to be crowned Emperor, an act that marked his break with the Pope and strengthened his political power as Emperor.
