The flat-bottomed tumbler has a body covered with a guilloché pattern of small wavelets, with the exception of the rim and a cartouche left in reserve.
The rocaille-inspired cartouche is engraved with a beautiful sailor under a German or Russian princely crown.
The tumbler is hallmarked:
. Minerva, 1st grade, before 1973 for 950/°° solid silver.
. Silversmith's mark AC with a rooster and a star for Jean Baptiste Casimir Aucoc.
In full: Aucoc Ainé.
Jean-Baptiste Casimir Aucoc is the founder of the silversmith dynasty that would bear his name. Born in 1796, he succeeded the silversmith Pierre Dominique Maire in 1821. During the 1830s, he became a purveyor to His Majesty the King and the royal family, which brought him a prestigious clientele, such as the one commissioning our cup. Initially a supplier of toiletries, travel essentials, and liquor cabinets, he became a silversmith and had his hallmark engraved in 1839. He signed Aucoc Ainé because he was the eldest of the siblings, although his two brothers were not silversmiths.
He died in 1865.
A very beautiful cup, with a fine pea-like finish that reflects its quality and exquisitely guilloché with wavelets, and, to top it all off, a princely origin.
