China, Han Dynasty (-206 + 220 CE), rare and superb set of three gilt bronze weights. The first is circular in shape, decorated with two tiger heads. The second is oval in shape, decorated with a chimera with wings. The third is decorated with a bird holding a branch in its beak on an oval base.
Originally, these weights should have been four in number, symbolizing the four directions of the wind: the White Tiger for the West, the Red Bird for the South, the Dragon (or another mythical animal such as a Qilin) for the East, and the Black Warrior (a turtle encircled by a snake) for the North. The set is in good condition except for slight wear normal to its great age, especially on the gilding.
Dimensions: Weight with two tiger heads; height 35 mm. Diameter 50 mm. Weight with the chimera: height 32 mm. Length 52 mm. Bird weight: height 34 mm. Length 44 mm. The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small lighter model from a well-known brand.
