"Fireplace Plaque With The Coat Of Arms Of Abbot Jean François Lallement (65 X 76 Cm)"
Fireback with notched corners, from the 18th century, in perfect condition, with the arms of Jean François Lallement (Lallemand), 1718-1798, 53rd and last abbot of Sainte Marie majeure of Pont à Mousson, prior from 1764 to 1787 and abbot in 1788. During the revolution, he used his fortune to buy back part of the property of the convent of St Marie to return it to his order, then he emigrated to Switzerland and returned to die paralytic in Nancy on July 6, 1798 at the home of his niece, Madame de Brevillers. The Abbey of Sainte Marie became the minor seminary of Pont à Mousson, a famous former university. An identical plaque is found in the fireplace of the chauffoir, the only room with a fireplace, of the Premonstratensian Abbey in Pont à Mousson, founded in 1126 by the Duke of Lorraine Simon I and Norbert de Xanten. The arms are also engraved on a marble table with the epitaph of Mathieu Lallement, brother of Jean-François, alderman of Nancy, in the church of Bouxières-aux-Dames. On our plaque, the coat of arms, in a cartouche, surmounted by a marquis' crown, is provided with the attributes of the abbots, the mitre, the crozier and stamped with an ecclesiastical hat with six tufts. Its frame is adorned with an interlacing frieze. Coat of arms: bona fide au naturel on a silver field with an azure chief charged with a gold triangle. This plaque comes from a private collection in Champlitte in Haute-Saône. Its weight is 76 kg. Bibliography: - CARPENTIER H., Plaques de cheminées, Tome premier, F.
