Cast iron fireplace backsplash, 18th century This rectangular backsplash is richly decorated in relief. In the center, a laurel wreath motif surrounds a stylized mask, a common symbol of power or protection. The composition is topped with an ornamental element evoking a crown or crest. On either side, acanthus scrolls, flowers, and arabesques are displayed, characteristic of the decorative taste of the Louis XV / Louis XVI transition period. In the upper part, two birds facing each other enrich the scene. The perimeter is bordered by a frieze decorated with floral motifs and foliage, punctuated by circular medallions.
