Circa 1730/1740
Holland

A Dutch gentleman's jacket or vest dating from the french Louis XV period. A ceremonial jacket designed to accompany a frockcoat or, more simply, an interior jacket to be worn as a negligee to accompany a dressing gown or banyan. The silk lampas, probably made by a Dutch manufacturer, also dates from the Rococco period. It is made from silk with plain weave and a damask effect of large silver-cream flowers in a strong Baroque style. Fitted cut with long basques, no collar, crew neck and sleeves cut to shape and slit at the cuffs. The eyelets and buttonholes were designed for button facings with tabs, which have not been preserved as they are probably made of precious metals and valuable jewels. Jacket fully lined with fluffy cotton terry for winter comfort (dust lining). One or two micro marks on the silk, which is not damaged and is in excellent condition. No other defects. Vest and Jackets are the ancestor of waistcoats and today quite very rare to collect from this period. Good condition in terms of colour and conservation.

Dimensions: Equivalent to men's size 48. Sleeves 51 cm, shoulders 38 cm, height 73 cm, chest 91 cm, waist 90 cm, hips 105 cm.

Iconography: Approximate models presented in the exhibition ‘Modes en Miroir, la France et à Hollande aux temps des Lumières’, Musée Gallièra Paris 2005.
