Louis XVI Period Demi-lune Commode, Eastern France, 18th Century
This Louis XVI neoclassical demi-lune commode is veneered in rosewood and amaranth. It opens with three drawers, two of which have no crossbars, and two side doors. The commode features a simple yet elegant compartmentalized decoration, with triple inlaid fillets and rhythmic mosaic cubes.
The piece is adorned with a subtle and elegant bronze mount, including laurel garland handles and ribbons, lock escutcheons in beaded medallions topped with laurel wreaths and ribbon bows. The two columns, decorated with simulated fluting, are enhanced with bronze ornaments depicting a cascade of scientific instruments, such as a compass, ruler, globe, goniometer, and a rolled-up map, all wrapped in fabric and finished with tassels, secured by a ribbon knot.
The commode stands on four tapered feet, the two front ones mounted with bronze sabots. The piece is crowned with a white marble top with a molded edge.
It retains original locks and three keys.
