Imposing head of Medusa, one of the three gorgons sculpted in black marble and resting on a fluted base in red breccia.
The patina is deep and gives it a great presence. We can distinguish the wings in her hair as well as the snake heads framing her face.
It recalls the Medusa Rondanini, The original of this representation of the gorgon Medusa dates from the 5th century BC, attributed to the Athenian sculptor Phidias.
The ancient Medusa Rondanini is said to be a copy from the classical Roman period and is so called because of its conservation at the Rondanini Palace since the 18th century.
