- The originality of this tapestry also lies in its wide border which further enhances its decorative effect. This type of framing is characteristic of 17th century weavings which, under the influence of Flanders, were equipped with a border that took on increasing importance. The delicately drawn border is decorated here with bouquets and falls of flowers (roses, tulips, etc.) and fruits (grapes), goldwork elements mixed with draperies, all on a brown background. The frame has, at the four cardinal points, elegant cartouches imitating wrought metal. Each one holds a medallion in which a tulip blooms. Pretty detail; the border itself is framed by a frieze with three pearls completing the highly decorative character of the latter.
- The attribution to a Flemish workshop in Oudenaarde from the first half of the 17th century is attested by other very similar weavings referenced such as the one present in the royal collections of England (The Royal Collection Trust) visible at this link.
