Greenery Tapestry, La Marche Workshops (aubusson Region), Late 17th Century - Early 18th Century

Verdure tapestry, La Marche workshops (Aubusson region), late 17th - early 18th century.

- This wool and silk tapestry shows us a greenery of character, vegetation appearing with great strength and vitality. This effect is rendered by the animated shape of the tree trunks, the abundant appearance of the numerous foliage, and by the luminous power of the light tones juxtaposed in contrast with dark greens and browns.

- "Greenery" is one of the favorite themes of Marchois tapestry, it was a mass production widely exported for a clientele delighted to find a decorative object refreshing their interiors, and all the more so when these weavings were hung on several shelves for form a “green room”.

In the Marche region, two localities established on the banks of the Creuse have made tapestry a prosperous and flourishing activity: Aubusson and Felletin. In operation since the 15th century, favored by a well-established drapery tradition in the Region and significant sheep breeding, the private workshops of La Marche developed rapidly.
