Lé Wallpaper “the Shipwrecked”, Around 1850

Strip of wallpaper "The Shipwrecked", circa 1850.

This strip consists of a central scene, that of two castaways, framed by ornaments of perfect symmetry in golden-toned tresses on a brown background (windings, crabs at the corners… .) on a brown background. The central scene depicts a rough sea and two shipwrecked people near rocks, a woman and a man. The woman standing, head held high, brandishes a white cloth with her left hand to attract the attention of a ship, while the young boy clings to her. Next to them, a basket containing a red cloth overturns into the water.

Printed on boards, the quality of the polychromy and in particular the very subtle renderings of the reflections of the water of this painted decoration demonstrate a high quality of work

Good state of conservation, wear and tears at the left side end are to be noted. report (see photos).
