Netsuke - Dying Man - Wood - Japan - Edo Period

Rare and unusual wooden netsuke depicting a dying man.
The latter is represented standing, his legs slightly bent, his arms on either side of his pelvis in a vulnerable position. The most remarkable aspect of this piece is undoubtedly the expressiveness of the face, powerfully conveying the subject's anguish and suffering.

Despite its very stylized general representation, we will notice certain realistic and finely sculpted anatomical elements, particularly at the level of his torso.

Japan, Edo period (1603-1868).
Signature partially erased at the level of the ribs "Hachigyoku".

Superb patina of use. Note the appearance of cracks in certain places of the sculpture.
