Lega Mask, "kayamba", Dr Congo
Horned masks called "kayamba" are among the initiation objects of the bwame (bwami) initiation society and represent an intelligent and cunning person. The material, size and shape indicate the wearer's rank within the society. Not all masks were worn in front of the face, as is the case elsewhere. Most of the time, they were held in the hand, attached to huts or displayed collectively on a miniature palisade.
