Gothic Reliquary Monstrance - Circa 1500
Our large monstrance from the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century is made of embossed and hammered copper, then silvered or gilded. Resting on a polylobed foot, a hexagonal stem interrupted by a flattened gadrooned knot with diamond-shaped cabochons, rises towards a cylindrical bulb which receives bagged ex-ossibus relics.
Saint Augustine and Saint Ambrose are honored here.
On either side of the relics are two fine flying buttresses topped with pinnacles.
Saint Amboise and Saint Augustine are linked as they were historically. Amboise, in his capacity as bishop, welcomed the future Saint Augustine into the Christian community by baptizing him.
Dimensions of 50 cm high by 21 wide and 15 cm deep.
Good condition
