Large Gilt and Chiseled Bronze Mantel Clock "Chariot of Minerva", Mercury Gilding, French Restoration Period circa 1825
Impressive gilt and finely chiseled bronze clock featuring Minerva standing on her chariot, drawn by two horses. The goddess is helmeted and holds an olive branch; a shield, crown, and fasces rest on the richly draped and ornamented chariot. The decoration includes a Medusa head, cornucopia, foliage, friezes, and ram’s heads.
The rectangular base is adorned with palmette friezes and a finely detailed Greek-style bas-relief depicting Minerva’s chariot. It stands on four flattened ball feet.
The dial, in pierced gilt bronze, is integrated into the chariot’s wheel and features decorative garlands, arrows, and butterflies. It has steel hands. The back of the movement is protected by a similarly designed bezel.
The clock has an 8-day movement and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. Suspension by silk thread. The movement has been professionally cleaned and serviced. Comes with winding key and regulation key (Fast/Slow).
