Surprising netsuke in lacquered wood representing a woman fighting over a parchment (or a piece of fabric?) with a Kappa, that is to say a mischievous little aquatic yokai.

Japan, 19th century.

Superb patina of use revealing the successive layers of lacquer.
Natural himotoshi, the rope of the inro being able to pass through a series of holes between the two characters.
