Louis XVI Style Commode After Riesener, The Comtesse D’artois Model At Versailles

Artist: D’après Un Modèle De Jean-henri Riesener,
An exceptional Louis XVI style commode made in the late 19th century after a model by Jean-Henri Riesener, cabinetmaker to Marie Antoinette: the commode from the Salon des Nobles of the Comtesse d’Artois, preserved at the Palace of Versailles.
The front, with a slight central break, is veneered throughout in lozenge marquetry of kingwood, tulipwood and olive wood. At the centre, a large oval medallion framed in gilt bronze shows a marquetry basket of flowers with a bird in flight. On either side, two tiers of drawers framed by gilt bronze mouldings are fitted with ring handles with rosettes and ribbon bows.
The frieze is divided into three gilt bronze panels: fluting with laurel wreaths at the sides and acanthus scrolls at the centre. The canted corner uprights carry long foliate chutes. The commode stands on tapering legs sheathed in gilt bronze acanthus, joined by a pierced scrolling apron, under a veined grey and white marble top within a gilt bronze moulding.
Fully restored and French-polished, it is offered in perfect condition.
Jean-Henri Riesener (Gladbeck, 1734 – Paris, 1806)
Born in Westphalia, Riesener arrived in Paris around 1755 and joined the workshop of Jean-François Oeben. On Oeben’s death in 1763 he took over the workshop and married his widow. Received as master in 1768, he completed the following year Louis XV’s famous roll-top desk, the “Bureau du Roi”, begun by Oeben. Appointed ébéniste ordinaire du roi in 1774, until 1784 he supplied the court and the royal family, Marie Antoinette above all, with sumptuous furniture that made him one of the masters of the Transition style and of Neoclassicism.
