The composition — flat areas of pure colour, orange-red, black, emerald green, lavender blue, organised into a rhythmic vertical architecture — is the most direct expression of Sonia Delaunay's formal vocabulary: colour as structure, the simultaneous contrast of hues as generator of space and movement. The slightly irregular edges of the flat areas, characteristic of lithography, lend the composition a handmade warmth that offset reproductions cannot approach.

Sonia Delaunay (Gradizhsk, Ukraine, 14 November 1885 – Paris, 5 December 1979), a major artist of the 20th century, co-founded with Robert Delaunay the Orphist movement — a term coined by Guillaume Apollinaire in 1912 to designate an abstraction based on pure colour and geometric forms. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and then in Paris, she developed from the 1910s a body of work spanning multiple fields: painting, lithography, textiles, fashion, tapestry and theatrical design. In 1964 she became the first woman to receive a retrospective exhibition at the Musée du Louvre during her lifetime. Decorated with the Légion d'honneur in 1975. Her works are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou / Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Tate Modern in London and MoMA in New York.
