Italian, Late 19th Century — Gilt-filigrée Parure With Micromosaic Panels
ITALIAN WORK, LATE 19TH CENTURY
Parure comprising a pendant brooch and a pair of drop earrings in gilt-metal filigree, decorated with panels of coloured glass micromosaic tesserae depicting fantastic birds and floral motifs on white and blue grounds, bordered by geometric motifs and scrolling ornament.
Brooch fitting to the reverse, with a suspension loop for use as a pendant; hooks for pierced ears.
The micromosaic panels are composed of minute pieces of coloured glass, or tesserae, meticulously arranged to form the decorative motifs. This technique was particularly associated with Italian jewellery and became popular in the nineteenth century, notably in Roman and Grand Tour jewellery.
