This work testifies to the most prolific period of Victor Vasnetsov, a leading figure of the Russian art revival (Neo-Russian style) in the late 19th century. The dating (1885–1893) coincides with the years when the artist was intensively working on the monumental frescoes of Saint Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev.

The subject depicts Saint Eudocia (Euphrosyne of Moscow, c. 1353–1407), wife of Grand Prince Dimitri Donskoy. As much a historical as a spiritual figure, she is venerated in the Orthodox tradition as a model of Christian wifehood and monastic devotion. From an early age, she distinguished herself by her piety. During the Battle of Kulikovo, she fervently prayed for the victory of the Russian army. After her husband’s death, she secretly led an ascetic life, wearing chains beneath her princely garments, before founding the Ascension Convent in the Kremlin, where she took the veil in 1407. She is celebrated for her miracles and great charity.

Here, Vasnetsov captures, with great technical finesse, the dignity and solemnity of the princess, underscoring the fusion between the splendor of the medieval court and the spiritual rigor of her destiny.
