Ernest Guérin (1887 – 1952):

Ernest Guérin studied under Lafont and Ronsin at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member, and was a member of the South Wales Society. He also exhibited atthe Royal Cambrian Academy. In 1905, he was awarded a vermeil medal atthe École des Beaux-Arts, and in 1907, the Medal of Excellence.

Painter and illuminator, a voice for the Bretons, the sea, the region, and its legends. Anatole Le Braz saw him as the interpreter of Brittany, imbued with the poetry of “the past.”

An original artist, he worked with equal skill in gouache, watercolor, and illumination, and participated in numerous Salons. His reputation grew rapidly, thanks to the distinctive nature of his work, which depicts the customs of Breton peasants, traditional religious festivals, and the untamed character of Brittany through its landscapes, climate, and atmosphere. Ernest Guérin’s landscapes reflect an artistic style inspired by Japanese and Chinese works, blending small figures lost in a misty landscape that fills the entire composition.
