Antonius Emonds, Aachen – Baroque Covered Écuelle, Silver 13 Loth (812.5/1000) with Interior Gilding, Aachen 1769–1770 Antonius Emonds (mentioned circa 1730–1774) · Aachen · Silver 13 Loth · Interior Fire Gilding · Height 11 cm · Width 22 cm · Weight 480 g

A covered écuelle in silver 13 Loth (812.5/1000) with interior fire gilding, late Baroque style of French influence, executed by Antonius Emonds in Aachen circa 1769–1770. Height 11 cm · width 22 cm · diameter 13.5 cm · weight 480 g. Hallmarks: maker's mark AE under crown (Antonius Emonds) · Aachen city mark 1769–1770. Very good condition consistent with age.

The écuelle — a covered serving dish with two handles, derived from the French Grand Siècle table tradition — is one of the most representative silverware forms of late Baroque Rhineland. The presence of interior fire gilding is characteristic of service pieces intended for acidic dishes (soups, sauces): the gold protects the silver from contact with food while enhancing the prestige of the piece. Aachen, a Free Imperial City (Freie Reichsstadt) at the confluence of French, Liège and Rhenish traditions, developed in the 18th century a table silversmithing of a quality and refinement comparable to the great Rhenish cities — Cologne, Koblenz — with a particularly marked French influence.

Comparable museum piece: a Tafelaufsatz (centrepiece) by Antonius Emonds, circa 1733, is held in the collection of the Klingenmuseum in Solingen — attesting to the quality and museum recognition of the master.

Antonius Emonds, master silversmith in Aachen, is documented in city archives and guild records from circa 1730 to 1774 — a documented career of more than forty years, making him one of the most active Aachen master silversmiths of the second half of the 18th century. His maker's mark AE under crown is documented in Scheffler, Goldschmiede Rheinland-Westfalens, p. 44.
