Medieval Arab-norman Lion Of Probable Fatimid Manufacture. Sculpture In Basalt 13th Century
Sculpture in green basaltic representing a lion accroupi sur ses pattes arrière, of Arab-Norman origin and probably of lost or Fatimid facts. The character and frontal expression of the female head represent certain heads sculpted in porphyry on the tomb of Frédéric II in the cathedral of Palerme. The prowess of the front pattes and the sharp claws is striking, just as a sinuous mane with clean and symmetrical touffs, so that the front present of the naïve parallel rides on a flat crâne. Petite yeux features of oriental style, long bottom and large top. Sicily, XIIe-XIIIe siècle. Dimensions: base 82 x 27 cm, top 72 cm.
