Francisco Pacheco De Rio. (master Of Velázquez) Saint Peter, Painting On Panel. 97 X 50 Cm.
Artist: Francisco Pacheco De Rio
Saint Francis. Oil on panel, 97 x 50 cm, Spanish School, attributed to the master and father-in-law of Diego Velázquez, Francisco Pacheco del Rio (1564-1644). Several works depicting Saint Peter come from the workshop of Francisco Pacheco, one of which is exhibited in the museum of Seville, his adopted city. It is interesting to compare this painting with another by the same master. A very similar physiognomy is noticeable between the two faces: a powerful skull, a white beard, and hair adorned with a strange tuft in the middle of the forehead. The tunics have regular folds, as do the two enormous keys of exaggerated proportions. The landscape is arid, dotted with rocks. The two paintings, executed on panel, present two very similar faces of the saint. It can be assumed that they are early works, dating from the 16th century. Later, Francisco de Rio repainted Saint Francis, but with a more youthful and less distinctive physiognomy.
