"Bronze "
Mercury Flying bronze with brown patina, after the Flemish sculptor Jean de Bologne (1529-1608), signed on the embankment. This artist is known for his many mythological sculptures and his career with the Medici. Mercury, god of commerce, thieves and messenger of the gods, is depicted in a position on the verge of breaking the balance. The author draws inspiration for this figure from the ballets that Catherine de Medici offered to her court. This protagonist is crowned by a winged petasus. His arm is raised to the sky and holds a purse between his fingers. Supported on tiptoe, he is projected by the winds of the god Aeolus. The original work, dating from 1580, is kept at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy. The whole rests on a pedestal, in black marble and chiseled bronze, with a rotating decoration of putti in their workshop. Imbued with poetry and symbols, "Flying Mercury" is a work that will seduce lovers of mythology. ******** Period: Late 19th century Good condition. His caduceus is missing. Previous restorations.
