"A Quilted Skirt Or Cotillion In Indian Bâton Rompu - Provence Circa 1860"
Circa 1860 Provence France Spectacular Provençal piqué skirt or Cotillon in Indian with herringbone patterns dating from the Second French Empire. Diamond quilting commonly called ravioli and sixteen rolls at the bottom giving all the volume to the skirt. Indian dress with wide stripes on white background and yellow background from Gaude with tightly sown patterns called bee, solid green, pink, red and black. This type of skirt is generally attributed to the Avignon region or the Comtat Venaissin. Clean braid at the bottom of the yellow twill wool skirt. Heathered printed cotton lining in chamois and white. Waist assembly with thin barrel pleats held by a braid of yellow silk bourette which seems to be from the same period. Tightening of the skirt in front and under the apron. No defects to note apart from a few very slight discoloration of the lining. The Indian has retained its new finish from the time.
