A KPM Berlin porcelain jardinière / fruit bowl on bronze feet, model Blumenschiff (Flower Ship, large), model no. 18768a, designed by Siegmund Schütz with model book entry November 1953 and executed by the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin. Total height 20 cm · length 46 cm · depth 17.5 cm. Marked with the KPM sceptre in underglaze blue. Very good condition · vintage.
The form of the Blumenschiff — an open elliptical vessel of refined elegance resting on four bronze feet — is one of the most characteristic creations of Schütz's post-war work for KPM: a synthesis between the formal tradition of the Neue Sachlichkeit and the organic lightness of 1950s design, anticipating the forms of the Space Age. The contrast between the immaculate whiteness of KPM porcelain and the patinated bronze of the feet is precisely calculated — a play of materials that Schütz mastered with remarkable assurance.
After the Second World War, Schütz remained the sole full-time form designer at KPM Berlin — all his colleagues had left the manufactory. It was in this period of intense solitary creativity that he designed the Blumenschiff in 1953, a piece that features in the reference literature on 20th-century KPM.
Siegmund Schütz (Dessau, 1906 – Berlin, 1998), sculptor, medallist and designer, studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Karl Albiker and Th. A. Winde from 1926 to 1931. From 1932 to 1970 he was artistic collaborator at the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, profoundly shaping the manufactory's production from the interwar period to the early 1970s. His particular interest lay in the design of relief decorations (Tiefschnittrelief and Flachschnittrelief), drawing his motifs from natural forms and classical antiquity. He collaborated on the ARKADIA medallions (1938) alongside Trude Petri. In 1985 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for his services to KPM Berlin.
