Biography :
Samuel Lipchytz or Lipszyc or Lipschitz (1880-1943) was a Polish sculptor. He grew up in Lodz where he received a traditional education. He made tapestries and became very interested in sculpture. He developed his talent by carving wood. He left Lodz for Berlin, then finally moved to Paris, where he lived in the artist colony, La Ruche, founded in 1902 by the French sculptor Alfred Boucher.
Lipchytz mainly worked on marble sculpture and ivory sculpture, with which he quickly became famous. His younger brother Morice joined him in his workshop in 1912. Samuel then taught him sculpture on ivory. One of his favorite subjects is the female dancer. In February 1943, he was arrested and then deported to Auschwitz.
