Biography :
Nicolas Alquin (born in1958) is a French artist born in Brussels. He is the son of the painter PierreAlechinsky. As a sculptor, draftsman, and illustrator, Nicolas Alquin initially studied art restoration and frequented theworkshops of sculptors Reinhoud d’Haese and Etienne Martin. He developed hisartistic vocabulary using three main mediums: wood (direct carving), beeswaxcarved and modeled from the block, and sepia or black ink (for brush lavis). In sculpture, some of his works are cast in bronze, Nicolas Alquin is particularlyinfluenced by the impact of tribal art on contemporary art. Through his works,he embodies a reflection on the relationship between the visible and theineffable. Thus, he readily appropriates so-called "traditional"techniques (primarily direct wood carving and bronze chasing) to imbue themwith diverse influences and recontextualize them.(Some excerpts from atext by Marc Bembekoff)
