Rulas Large Animal Sculpture, The Golden Eagle In Flight, Bronze Patina, Art Deco Period

Artist: Rulas
RULAS (20th century) – The Eagle in Flight – large Art Deco sculpture – metal with nuanced green patina, oval base in Belgian black marble – 58 x 65 x 25 cm. Large sculpture depicting an eagle in full flight, captured in a highly expressive moment of action: wings fully spread, head tilted, talons extended forward and open, as if about to dive, just before the catch. The entire composition is built on an ascending diagonal, giving a sensation of suspension and speed. The bird emerges above a jumble of stylized rocks, rendered in geometric volumes that act as a springboard, accentuating the overall aerial momentum. The animal is depicted in the spirit of the great mountain eagles, most likely a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), judging by its general silhouette, powerful head with a hooked beak, wingspan, and gliding posture. An emblematic piece of Art Deco, it transposes nature into taut lines, clean volumes, and contrasts between the organic and the architectural. The plumage is rhythmic, with overlapping planes that capture the light; the angular, structured rocks provide mineral stability against the soaring wing. The nuanced green patina, with its highlights on the edges, enhances the sculptural quality and the sense of movement. The position of the talons, clearly extended and ready to close, explicitly evokes the hunt: the precise moment when the raptor dominates its target and prepares to seize it. This tension—between absolute control and lightning speed—constitutes the dramatic heart of the composition. Beyond its animalistic aspect, the eagle embodies the power of domination and mastery of one's destiny, a broad perspective, decisiveness, precision, and the ability to "see" before others. In figurative language, to call someone an "eagle" is to say that they dominate their domain, that they rise above the situation with their intelligence, authority, and foresight. Here, the sculpture perfectly embodies this idea: the bird reigns over the space, above the rocks, and imposes its presence through the breadth and wingspan of its outstretched wings.
