Horstmann Eagle Head American Naval Officer's Sword Circa 1830 Very rare American Naval Officer's Sword by Horstmann, Philadelphia from pre-American Civil War era. 81.5cm straight blade with flat back, counter edge and fuller with patina and third gilt engravings. The riccasso blade maker's initials within a golden bow ⦅SHF⦆ Simon Helvig & Son. Stains and slight oxidation at the tip of the blade. Brass mount, chiselled with an open-beaked eagle's head at the pommel. Long-tailed cap. Keyboard decorated with a seated woman with a caduceus, anchor, flower, boat on the water and American eagle. Carved bone handle (small lack under the pommel). Play at the hilt, no play between the blade and the handle. Scabbard entirely in gilt brass, engraved with foliage on one side with shield-shaped button and two brass pegs. Without splinters. Total length 97cm Weight 825g (with sheath) Ref - S4722
