He receives his first instructions from his father. From 1875 to 1876, he continued his studies in Italy, notably in Rome and Naples. Back from Italy, he worked in Munich and Berlin. Then he moved to Düsseldorf where he lived for twenty years. During this period, he made spring landscapes of the Lower Rhine and the Eifel. From 1889 to 1891, Hartung was present at international exhibitions in Berlin, Melbourne and London. In 1900 Hartung returned to Koblenz. His landscapes of the Middle Rhine and the Moselle continue to highlight spring and luminosity.
