Beautiful oil on canvas signed Nicolas Henry de Gray (father) and dated 1868.
Nicolas Henry de Gray was a pupil of Léon Cogniet, he appeared at the Paris Salon from 1842. He is listed in the Bénézit.
The subject is probably an interpretation of the birth of Venus.
In accordance with the principles of history painting, the goddess of beauty and love rests on the waves to evoke the so-called anadyomen Venus, «the one that comes out of the sea». Little Amours and dolphins reinforce the mythological context. According to Hesiod, the goddess was born from the foam fertilized by the sexual organs of Ouranos, sliced by her son Cronos. The subject offers above all a perfect pretext for the representation of a naked woman conforming to the canons appreciated under the Second Empire.
