René-Georges Gautier (1887-1969), "Villefranche sur mer", oil on panel mounted on a frame 65 X 50 cm, mounted by spinners in a rough stripped wooden frame 84 X 70 cm. While the city is already immersed in the shadow of the mountains, the sun illuminates the port at the foot of the cliffs, bringing out the blue of the Mediterranean. The Artist, in addition to his activity as an illustrator, was a regular exhibitor at the Salons where he was repeatedly rewarded, producing portraits and military scenes as well as landscapes, often in an Art-Deco vein which earned him a record at Christie's.
