Wedding Ivory Tobacco Rasp Mounted On A Wooden Base Made Circa 1720/1730
At the top, a medallion with the coat of arms of France (three fleurs-de-lis in a wreath of leaves) under the fringes of a canopy.
In the centre, a couple in period costume with two shells on the gentleman's cloak.
At the bottom, two flaming hearts surrounded by various plant motifs and St Jacques shells, a symbol of pilgrimage.
This ‘open’ tobacco rasp was later (in the 19th century) mounted on a wooden base to preserve the memory of this union.
