The so-called pattachitra paintings are narrative paintings originating in the region of Orissa, intended for ritual purposes or for the many pilgrims who went to the Hindu temple of Jagannath in Puri. This temple which hosts the trinity Jagannath (name of Krishna as supreme deity), Balarama (brother of Krishna), and Subhadra (half-sister of Krishna), is therefore the place of pilgrimage for worshipers of Krishna. This painting represents this trinity. A handwritten mention on the back: "acquired in Puri in 1964 / Image of the great temple of Puri with the representation of Jagannath (black) and his brothers Balarama and Subhadra - Krishna trilogy." Provenance: Michel Andrault collection (1926-2020)
