Gabriel Revel (Château Thierry 1643 - 1712 Dijon)
Gabriel Revel trained in Paris with Charles Le Brun and became one of his devoted assistants working on royal commissions between 1670 and 1680. He specialised in portrait paintings and was received at the Académie royale the 31 January 1682 with his two "morceaux de réception" : portraits of the sculptors François Girardon and Michel Anguier. The artist received cimmissions in Paris and also in Dijon where he executed the Allegory of Justice on the ceiling of the Chambre of requests of the Burgundy Parlement. He settled definitively in the Burgundy capital from 1690. Dominique Brême counts more than one hundred paintings by Gabriel Revel. The catalogue raisonné of the artist will include our painting.
